This is Joshua Peterson with Peterson Electric here. We are at a customers house where they were having some electrical baseboard heaters issues. We found some junctions in the ceiling & one of them is shorting out on what we call a Romex strap, what they call a hickey, but it clamps down on the Romex. Someone clamped it down to tight and the wire got hot. I want to show you what we are up against here today. This box right up here in the drywall. You can see that there is no way nobody would ever know it was up there, so what we are trying to do here today is to pull this box down & re-splice it. It was pretty much Mickey Mouse wired with all the grounds. I am going to try to get that cause if you look in there, you can see where it started to short out & it turned out all black. We are going to mount this sideways & allow that junction cover to be able to be exposed, unfortunately it will below the drywall. That is the only way to repair this & to the side of this, here is another junction box, right there behind drywall & down the way, we have one more, what we call an open splice. You can see the red wire caps back there. Again, if you are doing work in your house, please make sure, even other unqualified electricians & handy man, make sure you are doing this right. The code specifically states, I believe in article 334 under boxes also under 300 for workmanship, that all junctions have to be exposed, behind a box, switches or device or a cabinet or whatever that way it is accessible, so if there is something starting to heat up, we can find it, otherwise, there is really no way to find it unless you have a thermo gun. It that wire melts in half & you can’t get anything to heat up or test the end of the circuit, put some current on it, you will never find it. Thanks for joining us! Have a great week!
