This is Joshua Peterson with Peterson Electric. I get asked quite a bit about boxes. Here is a prime example in the bathroom, these guys have a big mirror here. It is full length from cabinet to top of the ceiling. We are going to cut in two boxes for two wall sconces side by side. We have to get power out of the ceiling. If you can look at that right there, there is no box. It is drywall. This house is about a 100 years old. It is in Washington Park, a modern bungalow. If you can see this, see that right there, that is wires wired up into a fixture with absolutely now box to protect it. Keep in mind, that not only can your junctions not be behind drywall unless they are in an attic and accessible. But you also definitely cannot have fixture here without a box because that takes away that 2 hour fire rating that you are supposed to have & if those wires short out & ignite right there, on the porcelain with that old insulation. Your house is going to go up by the time the fire department comes. Play it safe. Go by the rules!
